Millennial Policy Center Statement on House Republican Postponement of AHCA Vote

President and CEO Jimmy Sengenberger asserts “wise decision” to indefinitely postpone American Health Care Act vote

Denver, Colo. - Jimmy Sengenberger, 26, President and CEO of the Millennial Policy Center, released the following statement on the House Republican decision to postpone today’s scheduled vote on the American Health Care Act:

“The move by House Republican leadership to postpone today’s scheduled vote on the AHCA seems to be a wise decision on both political and policy grounds. While it is essential that Congress repeal and replace the so-called Affordable Care Act, it is absolutely crucial that they get it right.

“The nation’s healthcare system must be revitalized not only by repealing Obamacare, but by replacing it with an effective, a vibrant solution that is patient-centered and consumer-driven. We are encouraged that Republican leaders in Congress will take additional time to diligently evaluate the proposal and potential changes that will benefit Americans of all generations, giving potential revisions more time to breath rather than rushing them through.

“As our healthcare team proposes in our policy paper released last week, there are three potential fixes that will help address the cost-drivers of concern to many in Congress. Congress should cap the employer exclusion for health insurance, a provision included in the original plans presented by Speaker Ryan and Secretary Price; eliminate each of Obamacare’s essential health benefits; and permit individuals to direct their tax credits into health savings accounts if they so choose. These common-sense solutions will help drive down healthcare costs and promote the choice and competition that Millennials have grown to know in virtually every other area of our lives.”

The Millennial Policy Center, a program of the nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit Liberty Day Institute, seeks to offer practical, principled solutions to our nation’s policy challenges, with an emphasis on reaching out to and representing the Millennial Generation (born 1981-1998).
